Only 140 miles today to Medora - so we'd have plenty of time to explore Teddy Roosevelt NP. On the way we stopped to check out the town of Glendive. We arrived in Medora about 1:00, checked into the Rough Rider Hotel, (there's a wedding going on today) enjoyed our picnic lunch in the park by the Marquis's Chimney.
Medora is a fascinating place. Four stories are told - Teddy Roosevelt's ranching here in the 1880's; the Marquis DeMores experiment with a meat processing plant (thus the remaining chimney); the Medora Foundation, the Musical and Harold Shafer. Check it out!
We spent the afternoon driving the 36 mile loop road. A pretty ride with views and walks. Wildlife sitings included wild horses, buffalo, deer, awesomely cute prairie dogs, coyotes hunting prairie dogs we presume,
There is an interesting operation going here. The Park Service fire department is conducting a controlled burn" over a very large area of the interior of the park. The intent is to restore the natural "fire cycle". The burn eliminates the invasive plants and grasses. In the meantime, it sure make it ugly - and smell bad!
For dinner we went to the "Saloon", which was the only place open. Medora's "season" hasn't started yet so its pretty quiet.
